... and doesn't running the legal limit in RTTY mode defeat the purpose of the mode, which is that with RTTY you can work the world with as little as 100 watts. Relatively easy to do when compared to running the same power on SSB.

This is a pretty simple to figure out once you get out of the linear units mentality and switch over to the darkside of Log Units.

Traditionally +/- 1 "S" unit = +/- 6dB change in received signal strength.
At 1,500W a 6dB reduction in power = 375W.
A 6dB increase in power from 1,500W = 6,000W

1,000W is 1.8 dB down from 1,500W
750W is 3.0 dB down from 1,500W

Bottom line with a small reduction in output power the result on receiving side is minimal, but the reduction in wear and tear on your amplifier is significant.

This is about as simple and straight forward as it can get. The advice that Carl KM1H has given you is spot on.

You will be safe at 1000W if the blower is set to high speed (depending upon
the vintage of the amp), is clean, oiled as well as clean tube fins.

With a well used tube keep it down at 750W.

I want to know what is a reasonable power level for the AL-1200 in a
RTTY Contest.

Yes, I know I can search the archives. I tried that and it's impossible
to sort through all the bull$#!^ posts.
I'm going to open my station up for a RTTY contester guest op. Make your
own reasonable assumtions about duty cycle.
Please give me just a number of watts output I should limit the amp to.
I'll take the low side average of all responses.
