I used a pair of these (see below) in series and a GE pole pig on a 4-1000A 
home brew amp in 1970. PCB galore ! ! !

Agreed, today I would never dump the oil.
Back then, with all the dumping without regard to the impacts we're lucky we 
didn't exterminate ourselves...
Maybe that vote is still out...

I'm not sure what oil they might be using today.  It may be relatively safer, 
but I wouldn't pour it out either.

I'm a little concerned about people just dumping the oil.
Transformer oil is a famous source of PCB's. How old does a pole pig have to be 
before you can safely say there are no PCB's in the oil?
