Hal,
here's a partial answer to your question re radios in carry-on luggage. In
February I flew to Tahiti from LAX (non-stop) on Air Tahiti Nui. I carried my
FT990 and assorted electronics in a locked Pelican case, as well as an Icom
735 in a carry-on bag.
My companion and I had a total of 4 checked pieces of luggage as well as
three pieces of carryon (including a laptop). On ticket counter checkin, our
checked luggage was randomly (yeah, right!) selected for X-ray while we
accompanied it. The Pelican case had to be opened and checked for explosives
or residue, but otherwise there was no issue.
On going to the gate my carryon with the radio (and a bunch of wire and junk)
was tagged for visual inspection. The radio was of no interest (neither was
the laptop). The Vibroplex paddles were of great interest however ... no one
quite knew what to make of them or for that matter my explanation of what
they were for ... "Morse Code?, you mean people still do that?"
No problems whatsoever ... of course I did have to give them my shoes, but
that's another story ... (I got them back).
On the reverse trip, things were even easier although all bags were X-rayed
leaving Papeete for LAX. No need to open anything however ...
All in all, I think that worrying about increased security re radios is
unnecessary. If you fit the profile you're going to be questioned and
inspected at some length, if you don't, you won't be --- radio or no radio.
73 and have a great trip
