Well, as to contacting folks before the contest, I 
rarely hear any QSOs involving an exchange of 
requisite Contest QSO information and I certainly 
don't see anybody logging those contacts.

In fact, during SS this year, I fired up about 7 or 10 
minutes before the contest and made a few QSOs (to 
actually get my hands used to a paddle for the first 
time in nearly 5 months).  

I actually did not make a QSO until 21:01:02.  After 
about two or three CQs.
