Hi Dave,
I have no experience on 160m and really little on 80m so I will not talk about
low bands.
However, during the last two years I have been actively chasing DX and trying
to learn the propagation from Viet-Nam my experience follows what you tell.
It is not always as pronounced as last week-end and I am not always able to be
on the air during the morning and the next evening, but my feeling is that it
is hard to have good condx to both directions.
This morning (02.00utc) condx were average on 15m but I managed to have QSO
with several stateside stations.
This afternoon (09.00utc), condx were also average on 12m but I had several EU
stations (not far to the west however).
I managed to have QSO with both areas but neither one was with good condx.
