The point of the check is to send a somewhat unique (to you) piece of
information, emulating part of the old traffic message format that the SS
exchange derived from.
It has to be on the honor system, since they may not have records of when
YOU were first licensed, especially if there was a gap, or you were first
licensed in another country/entity, etc. To say nothing of people
forgetting the exact year, as N2RJ aluded to earlier.
The point is to send the same consistent check throughout the contest.
Of course, this long predates personal computing and the prevalence of PC's
in our shacks, homes, and lives. NOW it is easy enough to maintain a
database of the checks people used in the past, so that you don't have to
"guess" if you miss it... Though you should still copy what you are sent,
not what the computer says it should be.
While I appreciate that many "vary" their check to, in part, defeat these
databases, it's still not right. Even if there's no official way to verify
it. Two wrongs don't make a right. (Three lefts do, but that's another
story)

What is the point of the ARRL stating in the rules that the check is the
