Ron.... from the prospective of these dinky American radio companies (Flex and Elecraft) , why would they lie and put out bad info? We all know that both these companies are credible with their products' claims. I do not see them needing to do this because they went outside their company for firmware / software design. This is completely documented. Ten-Tec, on the other hand announced today that all software / firmware work on Orion / Orion II / OMNI VII and others was all done in house. These little companies went out of house to have a really nice and functional product. I look forward to confirmation of the numbers by ARRL and others. Not buying Ten Tec any time soon! From what I read, they should probably seek outside help for their software as well.... at least for the ORION's. 73's Dick W5AK

Isn't it a bit premature to be making comparisons with radios that aren't even for sale yet? The K3, the Bretlinger (that got a fold-out ad in QST, despite it doesn't have FCC approval yet), the SDR 5000 (still doesn't have a price or even a picture), the 'maybe' Pro IV or 7800 MkIIGXLi or whatever they'll call it, haven't been put in the hands of objective users and tested
in contests, DX pile-ups, in labs like Sherwood's or ARRL's, or in
day-to-day rag-chews. Every one of these rigs will be good at what they do, but we don't know about the 'warts' yet! How many will have to be sent back to the factory within a month or less after delivery? How much of the specs in the brochures will turn out to be 'vaporware', advertising hype or just
plain hogwash?

Right now, I'd keep my money in my pocket and wait for some other pioneers
to catch the arrows!

As you may recall a
significant part of the original Orion's design work was more
or less outsourced as well.

Hello --

The above is not correct.

All of the Orion and Orion II design was done entirely by Ten-Tec
employees. No outside contractors for either hardware or firmware were
used.
