My brain fart for the day: Intrigued by this idea, I did a search and found the flex 1500 site ( http://www.flex-radio.com/Products.aspx?topic=F1.5k_features ) with a picture of the little unit. And I'm looking at the front panel and wondering "what the * is an Upper Side Band jack?" Oh, _USB_ oh, OK, now I get it. Guess I was thinking too much about the radio part and not enough about the software defined part!

Well, 1st off you'd have to go for the IF.... and that’s why I prefer the
N4PY sub-r mod and the FLEX-1500 running in panadapter mode using PowerSDR.
$650, ten minute (no solder mod) and away you go, without risking your
expensive radio to a soldering iron.

At $650, the FLEX-1500 is about the cheapest panadapter one can buy.
The P3 costs $700 as a kit, which takes about an hour to build. It's a
pre-tested board for which you screw together a simple enclosure and
mount a few connectors. Yes, it can be easily set for a wide range of
IF frequencies via a menu setting.
