The comparison of the Eagle to the 590 is very realistic.
The 590 is the best value for the money on the market.
The Eagle costs a little more, but it's worth it to me and many of us.

Comparing it to a 5000 is, well kinda silly.
For the cost of the 5000, I'll buy an Eagle, an amplifier, a tower and a
beam and blow the 5000 to smithereens!
If money doesn't matter to you, then I guess you can forget the above.

To be honest, I'd be lost without my MFJ-259B antenna analyzer.
I still like an external watt meter, and everyone needs a dummy load.
And sometimes I need my ANC-4 (noise cancelor), and of course I need a
remote antenna switch to switch antennas out in the yard not in the shack.

My point? You can buy a high-end Ten-Tec transceiver plus all of the above
for less money than a high-end Yaecomwood.
In other words, you get a well equipped station, not just a fantastic radio.

The most important piece of your station is the antenna (farm).
Money invested there will bring a much better return your station investment
(better on the air performance) than investing in a radio.
That's why I think for most people, the Eagle or the 590 is the better way
to go.
And I'll take the company Ten-Tec any day over the company Kenwood.

Hello, The quandry of what radio is faced by us all. I rely on Sherwood
Engineering reports to grade the receivers, and the Yaecomwoods invariable
pale compared to Elecraft K3, K2, and Ten Tec offerings. Stuart,

You might want to check the list again. The Yaesu FTdx-5000D is at the top,
above the K3 and all the Ten Tec rigs:

 http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

Besides receiver specs, the '5000 runs 200 watts out, which often means the
difference between a manageable QSO and none, compared with 100 watts.

Other than that, egonomics, reliability, and company support are important
criteria for selecting a rig. There's no clear winner here, but Ten Tec has
a slight edge in customer support.

If you're looking for price/performance ratio, the Eagle and the Kenwood
TS-590S are probably the best choices at the moment. Performance is similar,
but the '590S comes with the filters and built-in tuner, so fully equipped,
it's cheaper.

The ultimate decision is, as you state, getting your hands on the rig and
operating it. If it "sounds right" and "feels right," you'll probably be
happy with it.

I have an FTdx-5000MP, an Omni V, and a Kenwood TS-480HX. I like them all,
and each has its special attraction. (I also have a Centurion amp, and it's
great.)
