As I recall, having owned 2 different Omni VI Plus radios, the earlier one had a crystal oven and the later one had a TXCO. The advantage of the TXCO, it didn't have to come to temperature to be accurate. While the oven took a bit of time to stabilize as it heated, if the DC power was left on the oven was up to temperature and stable at the turn-on of the radio. And typical of xtals in ovens, repeated cycling of heat vs. no heat cycles caused more aging thus more frequent calibration was needed.

I recall in broadcast transmitters we kept the ovens on all of the time even when the transmitter was off. This assured more long term stability with regard to frequency. Golly.....that's been a long time ago.

Thanks Barry.

That's why he asked, because he wasn't sure.

I've passed the Wiki link on to him, so all is good.

And thanks to all who responded.

Ron, what your friend originally asked is full of mis-information.

What Clayton just posted is essentially true. According to the wiki,
the Omni VI and early VI+ used a xtal oven. Ten-Tec switched to a TCXO
in the later VI+ because the oven was no longer available to them. The
TCXO was available as a kit to retrofit earlier units with failed
ovens. But a proper functioning oven should have had equal or better
stability than the TCXO, so it really wasn't an "upgrade".

Earlier today, a friend of mine (a US ham currently overseas, but due to
return in a few months) asked me this question about the Omni VI+ :

"Omni VI+, was the TXCO a standard option or aftermarket? From my research
I
have found that the Omni VI stared with a TXCO and then moved to a xtal
oven
but that due to better longevity and stability the + went back to the
TXCO.
However, what I can not find is if they were optional or standard."

Anyone know the answer?

(FWIW, at least at the time I checked this morning, the TenTec Wiki
appeared
to be down, never had a chance to look further, and I have to spend the

of the night working on my club newsletter!)

Thanks!
