Mike,

Before blaming the filter try tuning around and/or move the passband tuning 
control (PBT) back and forth a bit. The 282 has an extremely narrow peak and 
can sound like there's nothing there if you're not tuned in correctly on the 
signal and/or properly centered on the passband. (Personal experience 
here....)
