Thanks to all of you who responded. I've come to the same conclusion, which is 
either a dedicated PC or using the Mac in virtual machine or Windows boot mode. 
The only question is the linkage between the serial to USB adapter and the COM 
port assignment. Most likely this will be trial and error.
