When guying towers the guy should not wrap around a tower leg, the guy 
should attach to a saddle/bracket that fits around the tower and removes 
all lateral force to the tower legs (if the guys are under equal 
tension).  This does not remove the substantial vertical load added to 
the tower by the guy tension.

Tempting as it is, particularly when climbing one,  I'd not guy a self 
supporting tower.
