Bunches of folks at the lab from which I retired used Outlook and Outlook Express but that was a while back, quite a while. Thunderbird has become their de facto standard, not mandated by fiat but gravitated to due to its performance and features.

All kinds of filters and add-ons.

You can have multiple accounts logged-in at the same time. Read on one, reply 
with another.

Separate inboxes, plus all mail in one list.

Or keep using Outlook, go to a funny web site, by mistake and have a cookie 
steal all your contacts and use those good addresses to send spam to what used 
to be your friends.
