Mode is a factor in both of these events, Dave.  The
rules allow only Phone and CW.  No PSK31, Packet,
RTTY, JT-modes, etc.  For instance...with sunspots at
a mimimum, a 10-meter operation would do well to learn
to use such tools...alas...the rules don't allow it.
