The Omni VI/Option 1, which is effectively a VI+ without the extra 9 MHz
filter slot, is a vast improvement over the 746 in receive quality. It is
more comparable to the 756 Pro and Pro II.
You will hear signals on the VI that you will never hear on the 746, and the
VI's receiver is better than that of the Pro and Pro II also. The Pro and
Pro II have other features that aren't found on the VI like an LCD display
with band-scan activity display... but for raw performance the VI/Opt1 is
the leader.
If you listed both rigs on eBay for the same starting price, the VI/Opt1
will go for several hundred dollars more than the 746. That shows you what
other hams think of the comparison.
Get the VI/Opt1.
