I think it's a certainty that they used a lot of tools in the software
design but I think the route of taking the existing code and trying to make
it better is the wrong way altogether. My take on the idea, no I don't have
the capability to even think about how, but bear with me, is simply that the
Orion or whatever software based radio is essentially just a collection of
some fairly well known hardware, the dsp's, the processor, the fpga's etc.
In much the same way as a common pc is put together. Now, Linux was not
built on the Windows framework, rather it uses some generic tools, X11 as an
example, but the operating system was built from scratch based on an
understanding of the hardware and some core fundamentals. I think if a way
forward exists with the Orion or other such software radios it is going to
be in the form of something other than that based around the TT code. Simply
put if the TT code for the Oriion is Windows then the future is likely an
Orion Linux.

We can't know for sure unless someone comments from TT, but I assume that
the Orion software is built using a commercial software framework or set of
libraries that cannot legally be copied, and which you or I would not want
to license -- or duplicate. The development tools (IDE or whatever) may be
restricted. Then there is the possibility that TT thinks there is a "secret
sauce" in there with great proprietary value to the company.
Or maybe they don't want to reveal some awful spaghetti code. :-)
