If you take your yardstick and tape a pencil to the end at a 45 degree
angle, walk back from the tree until the pencil points to the top of the
tree with the other end of the stick on the ground, then measure from the
base of the tree to the end of the yardstick.  Add 3 feet, for the height of
the stick, this will give you the height of the tree (approx.).  By taping
the pencil to the yardstick, you won't have to lay on the ground to aim the
pencil.
