I bought a several ammo type boxes of some plastic/rubber or synthetic?
material including weather/water seals for the lids at Boaters World here in
Nashville last year. Two have been up for over a year with the tunable cap
for my 160's with no prob. I think they were less than $20 if I remember
correctly. SO, you might try the marine dealers (West Marine, Boat US,
Boaters World for starters), for the same or similar product. Works really
well so far and cheeeeep!

Howdy, TowerTalkians --

Here's some feedback from Les Nuhn, NN6K, about PreLube 6 - the cable
lubricant recommended by wire rope manufacturers and carried by Champion
Radio
Products - <A
HREF="http://www.championradio.com";>www.championradio.com</A>.
Tnx, Les!

>> Hi Steve:

I want to let you I am very impressed with PreLube 6.

It was applied to my wire rope lifting cables & pulleys the day after New
Year's Day by my tower man who had been there the day before to repair a
broken
element on the KT34XA.

I was concerned the PreLube would spray all over the place ... thus wasting
it ... so he wrapped a plastic bag over the cable, then cupped both in his
hand. He sprayed very small amounts at a time ... and as I stood off to the
side
in the bright sunlight, could actually see it ... like a droplet, spiraling
downward as the wire rope above it became saturated and gravity caused the
downward flow. It worked great as when the circling droplet stopped, he
would
reposition himself about another 6 feet lower on the tower and repeat the
process.
I have plenty left over albeit he used it on a 3 section 55' crank up.

Previously, I applied it to the wire rope on the winch and was amazed at how
fast it was absorbed into the strands. It reminded me of a wick dipped in
Kerosene as far as absorption was concerned.

So ... in a nutshell, I think it's a very, very good product and would
recommend it to anyone.

BTW ... the tower is a Tristao TX-455 of 1980 vintage. I've had it up since
then ... and the finish still remains excellent. I live about 8 miles east
of
San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean as exposure to salt air is concerned.
The
wire rope & pulleys are original. The XA is also from that 1980 time and the
Balun needed replacing just once. It was a Lexan Bracket on the read driven
element that fractured ... and when I discovered the damage, was suspended
in the
air by just the one phasing strap. I am on my 3rd T2X with the tower. The
Coax
has been replaced once. >>

here. I too have the manual.

I've located a box I intend to purchase through a regional distributor
(Interwest), and the size and price are pretty good. The box is about 18 x
16 inches, and 8 inches deep. The list price is about $137, and the actual
sale price is closer to $100 - 105. The stock number is J1816HPL -
features stainless hinges and the ability to lock it. If you're interested
(and I have NO interest financially or otherwise in this company or
product), send an e-mail to:

interwest@prodigy.net

The gentleman who helped me is John Bradley.

I'm in the design phase of re-routing cables into the house/shack and
have a question regarding entrance panels.

The plan is to have all of the feedlines and control cables come to a
box on the exterior wall outside the shack. The box will have all of
the lighting arrestors and ground strap to a ground rod.

The question is getting those cables into the shack and what to do from
there.

My guess is to have a piece of conduit go from the box through the wall
into the shack. Do I then take the cables to another, wall mounted
panel, where the other 'stuff' is: bandpass filters, bias-tees (for rx
preamps fed through the coax), wattmeters, et al? That means another
piece of coax and another set of connectors. I know thatthis is an
issue in the VHF/UHF world... should I be concerned in the (decidedly
little pistol) HF world I reside in?

A similar question in re: interface cables. I've seen the HC8A (I
think) photo from N4ZR's Dayton presentation that showed hte use of a
large breakout box, as opposed to individual cables. Is this
manageable?

The space behind my desk is is pretty tight (the room is small), and at
the moment, cables are draped across the back of the operating table and
stuff is sitting on the floor.

All the pictures I've seen are of outside panels, not inside stuff!

Thanks in advance. While I may not acknowledge each response
individualy, I'll be happy to summarize the responses I get for those
interested.

But there is a metal plate available that fits inside the box that acts as
an SPG for those items you place there, with the ability to connect that
plate to a grounding system at the base of the tower.

I've had very good luck with $4 Rubbermaid Rough Totes, and I spend the
leftover $71 on stuff to go inside them ;^).

Seriously ... I mount the stuff on a sheet of aluminum -- from a salvaged
road sign, thanks to the local Highway Department office -- and mount the
Rough Tote on the tower, lid out, using U-bolts through the tote and the
aluminum to hold the whole thing securely in place. Windows easily cut in
the downward-facing side of the tote pass cables in and out, with
appropriate drip loops. If I were mounting lightning arresters, I'd put
them on the plate and bond the strap to its lower edge, passing through the
opening to a ground rod right below.
