It's said that if you have any skill, the only tools you need are a drill,
hacksaw and file. I haven't got that skill............but having got me a
guillotine (shear) and bender (brake) as well as a vertical mill, lathe, and
drill press, I actually enjoy doing the metal bashing myself.
I could do with a punch for 25 way D type connectors though, but the price over
here is around $200, and that's before the fly press cost is taken into account.
I've never had much luck at trying to mill the hole for one - maybe because the
aluminium is too soft.
George has a valid point about safety goggles. It's worth remembering though,
that worldwide, model engineers have a very good safety record - probably
because they wear goggles and so on. That's especially important if you are
using a wire brush in the drill press, as the wires can come out. There's also
jobs where I find ear defenders justified, too.
