Do a few on this forum recall when "solid state" was transistorized mobile
power supply, a great leap forward from dynamotors?

I'll let others explain to the younger subscribers of this forum what a
"dynamotor" was if they don't know.

I remember seeing pictures of the radios that used them being installed in the
trunk of `48 Fords and Chevy's with Leece-Nevell (6 v) alternators doing the
REALLY heavy lifting, current wise.

No, I do not want to go back to the good old days, period.

ps: I did see an engine cough and die under (too much) load at idle when a 80
watt Motorola low band radio was keyed up on a restored 1948 Ford patrol car.
(I had the job of retuning the radio, nobody else had a Motorola test set. They
had all been tossed out in the junk piles. gms)

Be happy they no longer use 6 volt systems. a solid state amp for that would
be a nightmare

BMW is reportedly going to 42Volts. This makes much sense for starting
  diesel engines and QRO mobiles.
