Your correct. The only way to be able to would have the chimney in place if
used. However say on some amps that used 3-500Z's like the SB-220 which were
fan cooled only, you should be able to get a reading of the anode to glass seal
on top, and probably the pins on the bottom according to which type socket they
used. For steel tubes though, those Tempil sticks are a good way to go to check
for a max temp. In other words, use a stick (crayon) to mark the max temp
recommended by the tube manufacturer, and watch to see if it melts. We used
them around welding, and heat treating all the time which is really what they
were designed for. They work like a charm though!
