The below is a bit silly. The reason automobiles have so much horsepower is that's a natural byproduct of torque. They need a lot of torque to accelerate from a stopped position quickly. Once cruising at highway speeds, unless torque is demanded by the event of an incline or the need to accelerate for some reason, an automobile only needs about ten percent of its peak power. A 30HP Cadillac or a 300HP Cadillac of the same aerodynamics can both cruise at 75 mph easily. It's how long it takes to achieve that speed from a stop that will vary. -WB2WIK/6 Well, Mr SM2EKN whoever you are, Every car mfg. advertises the horse power of their engines most V8's in the range of 300+ HP these days, If you drove "all out" with the 300 HP in high gear you would easily be doing about 150MPH way over the speed limit. AT highways speeds 55-70MPH you are probably using less than a third of the total HP. I guess it is kinda the same thing HUH?
