All clear now, and thanks to all who responded. Part of my confusion
comes from the fact that I run my gear in an outbuilding, which has it's
own breaker panel. By code, the GROUND and NEUTRAL are NOT bound
together on sub-panels, only on the MAIN panel.
As such, I plan on rewiring my fun little HL-1K for 240 to see if I can
boost the power output a little, and I will put a 3 wire plug on it,
with the ground lead to the chassis - and ensure the 'hot' or black wire
is wired to the switched input.
It's rated at 500w CW, but I am only getting 400 or so with 120v.
Voltage drop on key down is pretty severe, and to that end I will also
be replacing the filter caps soon. This little amp runs a pair of
4X150A's, cathode driven but not grounded grid, and I have installed a
new set (new? well, unused anyway! they were OLD new stock, for sure!)
I may try a pair of 4CX250B's I have. A compact little 500w amp that
covers 160 - 10!
