The early ones did have a variety of problems but supposedly the ones manufactured after 1991 were pretty much debugged.

When I was looking for one a few months ago, I was demanding the serial number. I found one with low miles, just back from an Alpha checkup, and bought it, late 1999 model. It had the Alpha-Max installed too. Been a wonderful amp and will do legal limit plus all day long, any mode. Also has the external fan and is relatively quiet, compared to the 91b I had prior to that.

Didn't come cheap but we all know "cheap meat" is not good either!

Avoid the Alpha 87a for too many age-related problems (I owned, sold).

Have others seen this?

I'm buying an 87A from a neighbor who is moving, and looked at eham reviews last night. Charly's is the only strongly negative review (of ten reviews). There are a few reviews that drop the star rating from 5 to 4 for "issues," mostly related to PIN diode issues. And virtually all reviews newer than about 2012 are 5 stars.
