Andrew's interpretation is correct.
Violating this rule does not change one's category to Assisted.
It is forbidden and clearly is cause for disqualification.
The ARRL and those other big DX contests in the fall are completely in line
on this issue.

ARRL General Rule 3.14 [1]
"3.14. In contests where spotting nets are permissible, spotting your own
station or requesting another station to spot you is not permitted."
I read that as meaning it is against the rules to ask someone else to spot
you, irrespective of what category you enter. If my interpretation of that
rule is correct then you were right to report the incident to the sponsor!
