Interesting that it's that point in the Solar Cycle, again, to lament our
personal short-comings. It goes something like this:
"I decided to go to this station, or this country, or this zone, or (fill-in
your personal goal-of-choice) to demonstrate my prowess in station building,
or drilling volcanic rock, or operating and I was extra skilled at getting
my gear (maybe illegally) through customs, or finagling a license, or
call-sign, or ??????? .....................ad infinitum."
And then come the complaints and/or excuses for losing.
And that list is probably too long to list here. But you get the point.
What should be of particular note is that Andy N2NT doesn't seem to be
complaining about 2 points, 3 points, etc. ( I know Andy decided late to
return to St. Kitts for V47NT, as he was a last minute addition to my
Neiger's Tigers Team for CW). He has gone to this nice 2-point location
(shall we call it?), but obviously does it because he wants to: maybe its
close to home, maybe he feels comfortable, maybe he just loves to operate
there, maybe his outstanding QSO totals ( that he always seems to rack-up
and are the envy of us all) are simply enough satisfy his motivations. Or
maybe Andy's like most of us: he leaves his ego at home and just "wants to
have fun" (Thank you Cyndi Lauper).
I think I'm probably go back further than anyone, still doing it today, in
making contest DXpeditions for CQ WW. My first was in 1967 (Zone 31, KX6DB)
and my most recent was last weekend - Zone 31, KH6ZN. And trust me, KY1V,
when you're in Zone 31 at the bottom of the cycle, you worry not about 3
pointers, or how close you are to Europe. You do it for the FUN.
Some really outstanding operators - like K0DQ from Zone 6, and N6AA, K1GQ
from Zone 31, and K7JA, N5TJ, W2SC from Zone 8, have all won CQ WW and
demonstrated that it can be done from these "impossible zones".
No excuses needed here.
Perhaps all should aspire to what N6AA and N6ZZ (sk) accomplished. Pick-up
bags and operate CQ WW from all 40 Zones. N5ZO has figured that out, too,
and is most likely to be the next to achieve same. And then you get to
sample the spectrum of points, population centers, what's hard/what's not,
who cares/who doesn't and worry less about the current scoring system and
more about how to be an international person - having fun.
After 50+ years of CQ WW, I've reached an inner peace with its scoring
system. It's (1) just fine the way it is, and (2) not likely to change any
time soon.
