Honest question: does recording a QSO count as logging it?
I have been operating under the impression that logging a contact means
"making a record of the time, frequency, callsign, and information exchanged
on paper or in a computer database", and that all logging for a contest
should occur during the contest. (And, by extension, the only thing that
should happen to a log after the contest is incidental cleanup and
formatting, without actual change in content.)
By that reasoning, I suppose if you repeat the necessary information into a
voice recorder, and transcribe the recording after the contest, that would
be considered logging followed by incidental cleanup/formatting. It
wouldn't be my choice of how to log, but I can imagine others doing it
(especially if some form of disability were involved).
But if it is OK to record a QSO as a form of logging, and then go back to
the recording of the QSO post-contest to transcribe the necessary
information...well that sort of an interpretation could definitely impact my
strategy, if I were actually attempting to be competitive. But that just
feels wrong to me, somehow.
