To follow up on Robert, Mike (and other offline) comments:
I was sold on this hobby as being a group of people that pushed
technology to the limits and invented new ways to do so.. Is remote
operation an arm of that? Absolutely. If it wasn't for amateur
ingenuity, would we have PSK31 (which is a fun mode to operate), would
we have advances in antennas, would we have advances in a lot of modes
of communication? I remember the first AX25 links to the internet, mind
you 1200 baud links to (gasp) ISDN networks..
Now, some folks have probably labelled me as "stupid" or whatever. My
point was on yesterday that hey, remote operators are out there. My "day
job" requires me to think relentlessly about latency.. I don't really
have control over direct paths to a remote station, so .... latency is
out of my hands in that case. But who knows, the next breakthrough may
just come from someone (possibly in the Ham community) that addresses
the issue.. THAT (at least what I believe, but I may be wrong) is the
essence of our hobby.
No, I haven't "gone crazy", as some people (may) have posited; I'm just
sick and tired of the constant slamming people get for trying to break
the mold and move forward for the better.
