I think a Contest mainly is "what YOU make it to be"
If YOU enjoy making lots of contacts in short time, then its Contest.
How all the other participants are making these contacts are none of YOUR
business as long as YOU get YOUR contacts and YOU have fun.
And I think it is great with all these 599 - 5NN - ENN and whatever
operators can make of abbreviations - it raise the challenge.
I go unassisted and use my paddle (except to the boring CQ's) and that?s the
way I like it. If the one I contacted used a DXCluster to find me and a
computer to contact me and a computer to read me, doesn't bother me. I go
for the Contest in MY way.
Everyone have their own way to make Contesting fun and more participants
gives more fun - you cannot make a contest for yourself.
Reading my UBN report from ARRL CW 2015 is experiencing.
I recorded audio of all my activity in that contest.
Now I listen to the faults mentioned in the report and it's fun to hear what
happened.
I got 1.8% Error Rate out of 2391 Q's - that gave a score reduction of
-3.9%.
1.1% Calls copied incorrectly - Of the 27 incorrect calls 14 of them did not
correct me when I sent their call.
0.5% exchanges copied incorrectly - Of the 12 incorrect exchanges 3 of them
did send a wrong state (S-H).
0.2% not in log - I was in "sync" with another station that I could not
hear.
The rest is for my account. Wrong typing and giving up on week signals.

Doug, I fully agree with you, but we must face the fact that contesting is
no more. Automation of all kinds has removed the original reason for
contests... copying skill improvement and fun.
Now a "contest" is an exercise in using data bases and automated stations
which are very different skills. Mourn for the good old days and contest
for yourself, not the other bogus scores.
My reaction is to seldom send in a log and never even look at other
scores.... meaningless now.... and no way to recover the former contest
ways.
