Here is the perspective of an op who doesn’t even qualify as a little pistol.
All this back and forth paints a picture in my mind of a runt showing up for a
pickup softball game. At some point, all the big kids go off to have a noisy
argument about some fine point about the game. Meanwhile, us little nobodies
are standing off to the side wondering: “Can we just play the game?”

I enter contests to see if I can improve my skills. I’m in competition with
myself and don’t really care what other ops are doing. Whatever they do to get
into my logs is good with me. I belong to a club where one guy consistently
posts some enviable scores. Of course, he’s been at this for a long time and
has very good skills. His station is a heck of a lot better than mine, as far
as antennas. Maybe not big-time competition class but pretty respectable.

Were he and I to trade stations for a contest, he would still beat me. So it
proves that I have a lot of skills to develop which, right now, just means get
into a contest and work everybody I can. I can understand and agree with a lot
of the points being made, but it still goes back to the big kids arguing about
what type of bat to use.

I’m shamelessly exploiting you guys to better myself. So whatever you guys do,
just get on the air and pull my wimpy signal out and log it. Thanks.
