That is because the firmware in the radio card does not report signal
strength. That is a feature that is only available in the Agere cards and
some versions of Intersil firmware.

This is freakin' hillarious...
I am pinging an AP-1000 with Karlnet v4.31 SA-4400 firmware. The AP is in
802.11b access point mode. I'm pinging it from my laptop that has an
Engenius 200mW card and the 802.11b NDIS driver installed. Funny thing is
my Laptop is invisible to the AP! I logged into the AP to do a link test
and it just does not show up in the list!
