[RFI] Maytag - Need quick answers - How can I tell the good ones

OK, My Maytag 9 years old just died and I am supposed to GO BUY A NEW ONE NOW.  
It was OK but by the posts here won't buy another as they appear to have 
changed something.  

HOW do I tell which ones to avoid?  What do I look for?  Digital panels?  
Bragging about variable speed (ie. chopping DC to control speed?)?
