Power line arcing is often easy to identify by viewing the AM radio audio
output on a scope (you typically see spikes at 120 hertz indicating arcing
every half cycle, but sometimes you will see spikes at 60 hertz indicating
arcing during just one half of the cycle). Simple software based PC scopes
such as Soundcard Scope work great for this purpose and you don't even need
to interface the AM radio to the PC (just let the microphone on the PC pick
up the audio from the AM radio).
