I don't agree Jim, i think many Transceivers only gave
the abillity of using AFSK, if you work with Soundcard Modem.

I use my FT817 and for contesting a FT900 with AFSK over Dataport's
so i guess my Mikegain isn't active, but everybody should take a look to
their soundcard output also......

In the  part of selfspotting i would say don't do it 'couse of QRM from 
others who lay down next to you for getting higher QSO-Rates....
