Despite being quite off the FCC regulations, I for one also firmly support
inclusion of the DE in the end of transmission for 2 reasons.
If I tune down the band and catch the very end of a message being just
ABC1A, I can read it as
1. ABC1A is calling CQ or
2. ABC1A finishes his exchange or
3. Somebody has just sent an exchange to ABC1A.
It means, I don't know WHO has just sent this message. Therefore I have to
wait for another transmission (read, waste my time) to find it out. But if
the message ends with DE ABC1A, I know for sure that it is ABC1A who I have
worked before and I keep on tuning down the band.
Another thing. During a run more than one station call, let's say, two. When
I reply, by mistake they both may revert with their exchanges and I did not
even copy the 2nd call-sign. If their exchanges are just VE3IAE 599 05
VE3IAE, I don't know whom I have just copied and whether I have a QSO
completed or not. DE <HIS CALL> would settle that right away.

Here is a new thread that I would imagine will bring up a lot of comments.
After seeing all the comments regarding exchanges in the rtty contests
lately, here is a part of one that brought to mind a question Ive always had
about contesting both RTTY and phone. The partial quote I refer to is:

Using "DE" in a contest where the exchange is US states is not recommended.
That happens to be the abbreviation for Delaware, and if there were QRM or
QRN the "NY" in the above might be missed and the Q logged as Delaware.

My concern is with the station identification section of the FCC rules which
is:
Sec. 97.119 Station identification.
(a) Each amateur station, except a space station or telecommand station,
must transmit its assigned call sign on its transmitting channel at the end
of each communication, and at least every 10 minutes during a communication,
for the purpose of clearly making the source of the transmissions from the
station known to those receiving the transmissions.
I have always included in my transmissions, whether in runs when giving my
QSL/QRZ or when answering another station and giving my report, with DE and
my call. This is because in the above cited FCC reg, I feel that 'at the end
of each communication' means after each contact with a particular station.

how the other contesters feel about this issue.
