No, Peter, I get your point. I was fact-checking your statements just like
you fact-checked someone else's claim that Technician class licensees
couldn't be trustees of repeaters.
There those who believe that allowing Novices and Technicians data
privileges on HF is an ARRL or radio manufacturer ploy to drive up equipment
sales. There are others who believe that this proposal is designed to cater
to the ham sailors whose only interest in amateur radio is being able to
send emails while at sea and, gee, they shouldn't have to pass a General
test to do so. I've also gotten an ear-full from a group of hams in my
general area who are firmly against giving up the 3600 to 3650 kHz segment
of 75/80m to digital modes. They are afraid they will have problems
co-existing with other phone users if they have to move up to, let's say,
3650 to 3700 kHz.
I do agree with your basic point that if you want more privileges, earning a
General or Extra license is not that difficult. I also don't run into many
Technician class licensees who desperately want to do digital modes on HF
_and_ who believe that upgrading is an insurmountable barrier. Maybe I run
with the wrong crowd. <wink>
I've listened to the various arguments and I'm leaning towards being in
favor of this petition with the expansion of the 80m digital band being the
prime benefit, in my opinion. Given the crowding among digital mode users in
the 3570 to 3600 kHz portion of the band, I think being able to spread out
those users across another 50 kHz might be a good idea.
