Intel 80286 or better CPU 
640K RAM 
2MB of free disk space for program files 
MS-DOS 3.1 or newer operating system

Your machine is definitely not underpowered.

My guess is that you were running TR in a DOS window, and you had some other 
processes running in Windows that were sucking up CPU cycles at critical
moments in TR's event loop.  Running TR on a non-real-time OS like Windows
can create these problems.
