A very clear display of what AGC gain reduction, or
switched in attenuation via such device on a radio
will do, just scroll on down to the IP table which
Ten Tec displays on the RX-340 specification web
site:

http://www.tentec.com/rx340.htm

There you will see that switching ON the attenuator,
increases the intercept point the same amount of dB's
as the attenuation, or even more! Or, if the a 10 dB
gain preamp is switched ON, down goes the IP by
exactly the gain switched in. QED.

So the "real" comparative IP numbers for various rigs for
such "comparative" use is to have both the AGC OFF and
the preamp OFF, and to use signal levels which will
show the true relation between intermodulation pairs
IN the passband and a desired "real" signal.

At least that is my opinion after stewing about this for
the last 30 hours or so, hi.

Out here on Kauai where the wx is just super, except the
pool water is a bit too cool for me for a swim, as is the
ocean this time of year.
