"Are you speaking from experience or repeating some old wife?"

Hardly, operated many contests at N3ARK's during the days of the C and heard
it many times.

You just need to be on a quiet frequency or one with a weak signal and have
another station plop right down on the frequency and hit you with a 20, 40,
60
over signal.

If I remember correctly, the C did not use any RF for AGC action - was 100 %
audio, so takes a while for enough cycles of audio to get the AGC going. Is
a very brief pulse viz the gun shot.

There was a guy in MD who did a mod (added some RF to the AGC) to markedly
reduce the effect. He also modified some routing and grounding which
further improved a great quiet rig.

Call TT and ask them. Let me know what they say.
Although, at the time, they really didn't want to ackowledge / fix the
problem
or recommend the MD guy, i would hope that they would remember.

If you don't want to call, let me know and I will.
