The fact that the key jack is falling apart should be a good place to start. I would take mine apart but it's too late tonight. Looks like you could unplug the PTT/CW jacks from the board and check for the short. Each jack has a diode in series with it and on the other side of each diode is a 10k resistor going to +5 then they all go to pins of U4.
There are 4 ptt/cw key lines. MIC/PTT, CW key/T, CW key/R and AUX/Key.
I suggest unplugging the CW key jack first and seeing if the problem goes away. Also if you suspect it's that cw key jack, go into the software and turn on the internal keyer then key the rig with your tx/loop button and see if it starts sending dits or dahs.

.7v? NOT GOOD. Do this:
Unplug everything from the Peg except for the 12v power, including the
computer. Turn it on. Measure the PTT again. If it still reads .7v, you've
got hardware problems. If it jumps up to 5v or so then you have something
plugged into either the assc. jack, key jack, or mic jack that is shorting.

I don't quiet follow you. Are you saying if you left click the TX Loop
button at the top, it goes into transmit or do you mean it allows you to
go
into transmit? If it's the former, it almost sounds like your PTT line is shorted somewhere and when you "close the loop" in software, it transmits. I still think you should download the TT software and try it first. That
will eliminate some confusion since it's rather basic.
Check the PTT voltage at the jack per the manual between Gnd and Ptt. You
should have between 4 and 5 volts.

Tx Loop button? What's that? In the "Transmitter" menu, I have a "Enable keying loop" button. Is that what you meant? I have mine disabled since
I
don't use a TT amp with the Peg. On your N4PY front panel, do you have
the
"Xmit Disable" activated? If so, disable it. Also check the "ACCInp"
button.
For microphone input it should be disabled.
If all this doesnt work, try the basic TenTec software and start all
over.
Out of ideas. 73

Hi Steve and Carl,
I have the latest ver of software and in the top row of buttons there is
a Tx Loop button after the Calibrate.
When I left click on this button it will go into xmit. If I go into the
settings/transmitter menu and
uncheck Keying Loop the rig goes into xmit. ACCInp is disabled.
I am starting to believe I have a rig problem, if I short the Ptt pin in
the mic connector to ground
there is no xmit also did the same test with the Acc connector with the
same results.

Hi Steve,
I unplugged all except pwr. still .7v, I checked this at the circuit
board plig-in and the same.
Following the circuit back from the board 4 pin jack there are 2
surface mount components.
The first closest to the jack end of the circuit measures .70 one one
side and .73 on the other
pos a chip res. When I check the 2nd chip component I measure the .73
and 4.6v on the outer side.
This suspect chip has a marking of EO1 or E01 on it, very hard to see.
Might be a cap. Any idea
what it is and it's value ?

Ok Steve,
I will do some checking tomorrow but the CW jack is a direct board mount.
In the mean time I will call TenTec and order a circuit diagram.
Thanks for your help ! Ron/K8FG...
