John - Try a 5K 1/8 Watt resistor across the two outer lugs on the pot itself. This should stretch the range of the knob. Another and better way is to just use a 10-turn 10K pot. Just substitute it for the original. It won't disturb the resistor value with an added parallel resistor across the outer lugs will. I have a Bourns 10-turn and from the wiring indication on it, you should be able to rewire it the same as the original panel pot.
