With the Paragon II, the Omni VI Plus and now the Omni VII, I connect the line in and line out on the back of the radio direct to the sound card. There are no pads, no transformers, and no interface box. The sound card in the computer provides for line in and line out signals. All adjustments are handled by the Windows XP mixer via the MixW2 software. T/R switching is handled by the VOX set to max gain and min delay. I am very pleased with the IMD reports of -25 dB or better with the PSK-31 mode.

Transmitter is always adjusted for max or rated output thus RF Level is always 100%. The level from the sound card along with the respective input control on the radio is then adjusted to produce 30 to 35 watts of output with PSK-31 data. For RTTY I use AFSK mode and adjust the soundcard or respective input control on the radio for 50 watts output. No additional cooling is used under these conditions. Speech processing is always OFF and the levels are such that the ALC LED does not illuminate.

Now if you find it necessary to feed signals into a MIC input either on the sound card or the radio, then some 20 to 30 dB of resistive attenuation is most likely needed. This can be a simple L network consisting of a 10K ohm series resistor with a 1K ohm resistor to ground. These can be mounted with care inside the respective connectors. For these, 1/4 watt resistors are very adequate. The 10K ohm resistor is always in series with the source signal and the 1K ohm resistor is across the input.

Do you run an interface or any form of impedance matching?

Absolute correct. Run the RF output always at 100% and reduce the audio
level from the sound card and or the mike gain to produce 30 to 35 watts of
output. Now then, this says tune up to maximum output or rated output in
the TUNE or CW mode. Leave the RF level or Drive or how ever your radio is defined to operate at maximum or rated output. Should be about 100 watts or
so. Then with signal from the computer soundcard, adjust the soundcard
level in combination to the MIC or Line level so that the output is abut 30 to 35 watts. If you are feeding the MIC input then the level control should
be about the same as you use for SSB.

Key point, do not use any form of speech processing and do not adjust any
level such that the ALC indicator is active. This applies to any radio
regardless of make, model or what ever. If you feel that you need more
watts, then you need to add an external amp. And here again, tune to max or
rated output and leave things this way. Do not re-tune for lower power
level. Then reduce audio from the sound card such that power output is 30
to 35 % of rated output.

PSK set-up and operation is a piece of cake. Most hams make it too
complicated.

I don't have an OMNI mine is a Jupiter, and hve been told by several hams
and TT to run my 'RF output'
at 100% out and use the soundcard and interface to adjust the meter
reading to ~30 watts.
However, I'd much rather adjust the R.F. out to say 30 watts and leave it
set.
A note to K4TAX: I am not familiar with the OMNI, but with the jupiter
they trll me to set the mic level the same as I would SSB. Your post says
to set the mic level to 30 watts. What about your R.F. out setting?
The more I read about PSK and the TT the confusder I gets. Hi
