With all due respect Geoff, I just don't buy that anyone can not get on the air soley because they can't afford the price of a radio. In this day and age there is such a wide range of used gear out there on eBay, on eHam, on all the different swaps... One could build a simple one-tube transmitter and find an old SW radio at a garage sale and get on the air. If someone claims to be soo broke that they can't afford even the bargain basement used stuff then they surely can't afford, or have the time for, a hobby; they've got to spend their time procuring food and finding shelter.
