I have talked to guys who say the O1 was closer and in fact my 565 seemed to
be more like 3 hz apart - I have had two 566 O's in the shack and they were
both off 5 plus fractional hz. I never worked hard enough at it to determine
exactly the sub hz number. But I can clearly hear the beat in the noise and
signals when both rx are set up with one vfo and feeding to "both" in both
ears . Maybe they are not all the same ?????? One person even suggested that
the DSP reference might be creating the differences ???? I am nowhere a
digital guy so dunno. I just know what I hear and what I see on a scope.
I do agree I hear a slight enhancement as the beat rolls thru but it does
not last long enough to help much if at all.
I think I am beginning to see the picture - most people are satisfied by
listening to the recovered audio one channel in one ear and other channel in
er ear . That would give "diversity" reception with separate antennas in
that as one builds the other might be going down. I am trying to be able to
phase both rx outputs together to a single output.

Subject: Re: [TenTec] Frequency difference in dual receivers
I've used both my Orion and K3 extensively in stereo diversity mode.
To be honest, I never even notice the frequency discrepancy in the
Orion receivers. Plenty of soundclips at
http://n1eu.com/orion/diversity.htm and
http://n1eu.com/orion/topband.htm if you want to hear for yourself.
Of course in tough conditions, the K3 subreceiver will be the better
performer because it was engineered to a higher standard. But most of
the time, the Orion sub does just fine.

I don't have an Orion, or any other rig with dual receivers. I have
had the opportunity to use an Elecraft K3 with dual receivers, both on
the same frequency, using separate antennas. That setup has really
helped us at KH6LC to hear weak signals in 160 meter contests. That
claim can be backed up by the results posted on line for the Stew Perry
warm-up this year. Having a rig with dual receivers, which are always
off frequency by a few Hertz or a fraction of a Hertz would be very
frustrating, having used the K3.
By the way, if they are a few Hertz off, then they aren't really
using the same VFO. They may be using the same "virtual VFO" control of
two separate synthesizers with different resolution step sizes. Even
with the K3, I believe the two receivers do not use the same VFO. They
use two separate, yet identical, and phase locked VFOs.
