John,

I bought my O2 when they first came out and the only repair I have had is the cap(s) on the power board.
I called Ten Tec and explained what happened and the symptoms.

Whom ever I talked to said, "sounds like the caps on the power distribution board, I'll drop them in the mail and you will be up and running in no time".

Since I didn't want to be off the air for a few days, I tore into the radio and found one of the caps to be "suspect". Drove down to Radio Shack and picked up a 470uF at 35V and was back on the air in about two hours.

The caps from Ten Tec showed up a couple of days later, and I still have them in the plastic bag they came in.

Knock on wood, but this radio is the best I have ever had repair wise (had a couple of problems with the O1).

P.S. Ten Tec beats the pants off Yaseu and Icom for service. The idiots at Yaseu don't even listen to you when you send a radio back and you TELL them what needs to be fixed and why. They fix the symptom, not the problem; and then it takes damn near a month.

Have a IC-910 and I would dump it if Ten Tec or K3 made a satellite radio. ICOM pissed me off several years ago when somebody took a "five finger discount" on the control head for a mobile two mtr rig I had in the car. ICOM told me they don't sell the control head seperately! I thought one of the advantages of a remote head was if someone stole it, you didn't have to replace the whole radio!!

Subject: [TenTec] Repair history for Orion

Listed below is the repair history for my Orion. I have been very happy with
Ten-Tec's service, but I am curious if my service history for my Orion
approximates the experiences of others.

Orion purchased new from factory in August, 2005
Replaced fried logic board components in March, 2007
Replaced bad capacitors on power distribution board in July, 2007
Replaced bad display and bw encoder in December, 2008

Luckily it is only a one-hour drive from my house to Ten-Tec, so I did not
need to go through the pain of packing and unpacking the Orion for shipment
by carrier.

Does this repair history seem about right for an electronic unit as complex
as an Orion? I should mention that my operating environment has sometimes
been in an rf-hot environment.
