Another reason for "backtracking" to HF, is that most people now  
realize that a very energetic solar flare will pretty much fry most  
of the orbiting satellites.  That scale of solar eruption is rare,  
but it can happen.  Back in 1859, there was a flare large enough to  
severely disrupt telegraphic (landline) communication.  Sparks flew,  
and fires broke out from the induced currents on the wires.
