Another reason for "backtracking" to HF, is that most people now
realize that a very energetic solar flare will pretty much fry most
of the orbiting satellites. That scale of solar eruption is rare,
but it can happen. Back in 1859, there was a flare large enough to
severely disrupt telegraphic (landline) communication. Sparks flew,
and fires broke out from the induced currents on the wires.

Rumor going around saying CW is coming back to the Navy. Reason
being during time of distress.
A year or two ago, the Navy announced it was going back to HF for
inter-battlegroup
communications instead of using satellite. This was based on
economy. CW was not
mentioned, just "data transmissions." This could also mean
digitized voice.
So it's a partial victory for "traditionalists." (and common-sense
folks)
