Replying to Stuart's comment about openwire, but I changed the title..
When you do not have the Thermopain double-glass windows, but just a single
window, you can build two capacitors using heavy duty aluminum foil or thin
copper plates, and then shoot the signal right through the window.
I made mine out of 4 pieces of doubled aluminum foil, each about 1 sq. ft.
in size, taped to the window.
2 inside, separated about an inch or so, and and 2 outside.
This was 1963/64.
I had no way to measure the loss, but in my skeds and traffic nets, I seemed
to be as loud as I ever was when using direct feed.

Twin lead is a great antenna transmission line. Heavy duty types and
ladder line are cheaper than good coax and have lower loss. One can
easily adpat any station to running balanced line even thru windows with
good results at little effort. Putting a piece of pipe insulating foam
across the bottom of a sill works even with metal windowns. Another
piece of foam stuffed between the sash and upper casement seals against
air leaks.
