The FT 890 and 900 are very nice also....but they are in another class of radio, that
I can find anywhere today.
A radio that just works great, with no frills is no longer available....unobtanium these days. (new that is) If band conditions in Europe, or elsewhere would clobber the radio's front end...well, not an issue for me.... I'll bet it would also crunch a TS520.....but for the same reason, I love that radio, and it gets my vote as one of the top 5 rigs of all time. Specs are only one of many criteria which I would use in choosing it so.

OK, but the 728's receiver was pretty worthless here in Europe, especially
on 40m.
With the criteria you spoke of, I'd much prefer the FT-900AT.
No software menus, simple to operate and the radio had decent performance...
so much so that I still have one today as backup for my Eagle.

Very much like the Kenwood TS-130S......
Simple, no extra junk...no menus, analog S meter, and works great!
And, it was a very nice looking rig...IMHO.

Dave,

I understand you missing the FT-102. That was a fine radio. Would
love to have one today.
And the KWS-1 and Ranger are nice for old time sake, but why the IC-728?

IC-728, my Yaesu FT-102 ......Such is life!!!

I paid over $600 for my Paragon II back in 2012. The Paragon II is
much more reliable than the earlier Paragons. The VCO board
problems were fixed, and the back up battery problems were
eliminated when Ten Tec redesigned the uP board to use Dallas chips.
Cutting one wire opens up the TX for 60 meters and MARS. The
receiver is general coverage and most hams like the audio.
Considering your friend has the matching power supply, and the list
of optional filters, I'd be asking for a least $700.00 for the
Paragon gear. The problem is the stigma that results from the poor
eHam reviews which are almost entirely based on the issues that
plagued the early Paragon models.

I use my Paragon side by side along an Omni VI that I bought from
Barry on this group.
